Lesson 3 September 23 - October 4, 2013

Kindergarten

  • March in to Mr. Drum using fast and slow tempos. Ask the students to identify each tempo.
  • Clap your first name activity. Students will take turns clapping the syllables of their first name, the class will echo that students name back to them while clapping it. 
  • Echo sing the song "No More Pie". Students are practicing matching pitch and using their singing voices.
  • Review class dojo.
  • Review xylophones and metallophones and how to play them. Each student will get a turn to demonstrate where to play on the bars (on the belly buttons)
  • Sing "Goin' to the Farm" and review the animals and instruments that we have done so far. Ducks - rhythm sticks, Hens - tambourine. Discuss what animal we will meet next.
  • Discuss Lambs. Students will spell LAMB and make the sound for each letter. Discuss the silent B in lambs. 
  • Sing "Listen to the Lambs" while clapping on the Baas. Sing again and shake fists forward on the Baas. Ask the students to guess what instrument we might play if we shake our hands.
  • Introduce maracas and where the come from. 
  • Play maracas with "Listen to the Lambs" 
  • Turn in maracas, check our class dojo points and line up.

1st Grade

  • March in to Mr. Drum using loud and soft beats. Ask students to identify the dynamics using our dynamic symbols.
  • Students sing "Here Students sing "Here" when teacher sings their name. We are practicing matching pitch from high to low.
  • Review class dojo.
  • Introduce xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels. Students will learn to play in the center of the bars (the belly buttons). Each student will have a turn to demonstrate where to play on the bars. 
  • Review instrument clue and pass out the clue kits. Each student will have a turn to play an instrument for the clue game. We will listen to 1, 2, or 3 sounds at a time.
  • Echo sing "Oh, In the Woods"
  • Check our class dojo points and line up.

2nd Grade

  • March in to Mr. Drum using a Sww beat. 
  • Review class dojo.
  • Echo sing Solfege So and Mi. Identify So as higher than Mi and Mi as a lower pitch than So. 
  • Echo rhythms using body percussion.
  • Review quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests learned last year in 1st Grade. Quarter notes receive 1 beat and we use the syllable Ta, Eighth notes receive 1/2 beat and we use the syllable Ti, quarter rests last for one beat of silence. 
  • Practice rhythm reading and playing using quarter notes and quarter rests.
  • Review song "Charlie Over the Ocean" using iconic notation of fish. Students will analyze the the movement of the fish representing the song. Connect to high and low, and to So and Mi solfege signs. Sing the song following the fish using So and Mi with hand signs. Then we will sing the words to the song while still using the So and Mi hand signs.
  • Sing "Charlie Over the Ocean" again while keeping a steady beat with both hands on the lap.
  • Introduce and review xylophone, metallophones, and glockenspiels and how to play them. Each student will get and opportunity to demonstrate the correct place to play on the bars by improvising on the instrument with their fingers. 
  • Then we will play on the C and G bars to a steady beat while we sing the song "Charlie Over the Ocean". 
  • Introduce and review the mallets. Practice playing the mallets on the ground to the steady beat while singing our song.
  • Check our class dojo points and line up.
