Lesson 2 September 9-20, 2013

Kindergarten

  • March in to Mr. Drum using fast and slow tempos. Ask students to identify the tempo of Mr. Drum's beat. 
  • Sing "My Poor Hand is Shaking" while shaking our hands and other things to the steady beat. 
  • Learn about Class Dojo and how we can earn points and get rewards. 1st Goal is 5 points - change your monster and pick a prize out of the treasure box. 
  • Introduce xylophones and metallophones. Learn how to play these instruments using our fingers. Play on the center of the bars or the belly buttons of the bars. 
  • Sing "Goin' to the Farm" from last week. Discuss the animal we have already met and the instrument we played with it. Ducks - rhythm sticks
  • Students will guess the next animal from the farm - Chickens. Discuss the Chicken family and the sounds each make. Rooster, Hen, Chick. Spell HEN for our song "Listen to the Hens"
  • Sing "Listen to the Hens" while clapping on the words Cluck, Cluck, Cluck.
  • Introduce the tambourines and different ways to play them. 
  • Each student will have 2 turns to play the tambourine with the song "Listen to the Hens" on the words Cluck, Cluck, Cluck. Half the class will be playing at a time and we will learn how to pass instruments to classmates who need a turn. 
  • Turn the tambourines in, check our class dojo points and practice the line up procedures.

1st Grade

  • March in to Mr. Drum using loud and soft beats. Ask students to identify the dynamics of the beats using the dynamic terms learned last week.
  • Students sing "Here" when teacher sings their name. We are practicing matching pitch from high to low. 
  • Learn about Class Dojo and how we can earn points and get rewards. 1st Goal is 5 points - change your monster and pick a prize out of the treasure box. 
  • Review our different voices - Speaking, Whisper, Calling, and Singing. 
  • Review all dynamic symbols. 
  • Identify the dynamics of three pieces of music. One loud, forte ("I like Drums" by Dave Holland); One soft, piano ("Claire De Lune" by Debussy);  and one loud and soft, forte and piano (Beethoven's 5th Symphony). Discuss Beethoven and the style of his music and compare Beethoven's music with Bach's music that we hear last week.
  • Review the 6 instruments used last week: wood block, tambourine, cow bell, triangle, guiro, hand drum and match each to a picture representation. 
  • Play game instrument clue. Each student will get a set of 6 pictures matching the instruments played last week. Students will listen for the sound clue to identify the instrument, but they will not be able to see the instrument. Students will identify the instrument by holding up the picture matching the instrument. If there is time, invite students to come up and play an instrument with the teacher. Now the students will be listening for 2 sounds.
  • Pu away detective kits, check our class dojo points and line up. 

2nd Grade

  • March in to Mr. Drum using a triple meter. One strong beat and two weak beats. (Sww) Point out that the louder beat is called a strong beat. 
  • Play name game "Each Peach, Pear Plum" from last week using a faster tempo or speed.
  • Learn about Class Dojo and how we can earn points and get rewards. 1st Goal is 5 points - change your monster and pick a prize out of the treasure box. 
  • Review the Solfege hand signs So and Mi from last week. Echo sing on So and Mi practicing the hand signs.
  • Review the poem "Go! Go! Go!" with the drum part.
  • Pass out drums and play a drum passing game with the teachers rhythm/beat on the Djembe drum. Students will A - speak the poem and play the drum part. and them B - pass the drum and get ready to play. Game continues using the form AB. 
  • When students are comfortable with the drum part to the poem. Ask them to internalize the poem (think the poem without saying it) Now there is no speaking. Teacher will change tempo during the B section - passing section of the game. When the game is over take up drums and discuss how we changed tempo during the game.
  • Introduce the song "Charlie Over the Ocean" and teach it to the class using echoing.
  • Check class dojo points and line up.
