1st Grade

  • March in to the beat of Mr. Drum
    • We will march to loud and soft beats
  • Seat students in their spot on the floor
  • Review our different kinds of voices from Kindergarten. Speaking, whisper, singing, and calling(playground) voices. Practice it with a poem.
  • Connect the volume of our different voices to a variety of dynamics. Using the what's our dynamic? Chart. (see picture)
  • Go over the music class rules. (see picture)
  • Play follow the leader. Students will copy the teachers movements and practice keeping the steady beat to music. We will be listening to J.S. Bach, Suite No. 2 in b minor: Badinere.
  • We will sing the song "Welcome Back to School". The song asks "Can you clap and count to eight?" Students will then practice clapping the steady beat and counting to 8. We will substitute clap for other actions like -snap, jump, stomp, etc.
  • Then we will add instruments to play on the counting to eight. The instruments we will be playing are: woodblock, tambourine, triangle, cow bell, hand drum, and guiro. Students will take turns playing the instruments. We will sing the song multiple times to give each student a chance to play several instruments.
  • Put the instruments away in their correct spots and practice the line up procedures.

The class then repeats their name back(Ex. Her name is Mrs. G). Then the game continues around the room until all the students have said his or her name.

  • Rhythm Echos. Students will echo a rhythm given by the teacher using body percussion. Body percussion includes clapping, stomping, patting, and snapping.
  • Melody Training. We will learn about the Solfege hand signs So and Mi and practice echoing with the hand signs.
  • Learn the poem "Go! Go! Go!". Add clapping to the words one, two, three and go go go. Practice the poem with clapping while the teacher plays a different rhythm on the drum. Practice the poem with internalizing the words.
  • Introduce the hand drums and different ways to play them. Add the hand drums to replace clapping in the poem. Our goal is to internalize the poem while playing our drums.
