Lesson Plans September 3-14, 2012

Kindergarten
-March in the classroom to the steady beat of Mr. Drum. Practice starting and stopping to different tempos (speeds)
-Discuss and practice the music class rules. 1. Raise your hand to speak 2. Be an active participant 3. Be Kind and Considerate 4. Play instruments when asked.
-Discuss our Behavior Beats Board. Each class has a music note that moves along the behavior beats board. Students earn places to move by making good choices and following the rules. When a class gets to the end of the board, we earn a star, a prize, or special music time.
-Listen to and sing along with the song "Bump, Bump, Bump". Students are listening for the different characters that got on the bus. When the song is over we will name characters that got on the bus.
-Introduce the rhythm sticks smoothie and bumpy. Discuss how we hand out instruments. Students must sit criss cross with the hands in their lap until it is time to play the instruments.
-Discover ways to play the rhythm sticks by copying the teacher while playing the steady beat to marching band music.
-Read and sing-a-long with "Pete the Cat: I love my white shoes".

1st Grade
-March in the classroom to the steady beat of Mr. Drum. Practice starting and stopping to different tempos (speeds)
-Discuss and practice the music class rules. 1. Raise your hand to speak 2. Be an active participant 3. Be Kind and Considerate 4. Play instruments when asked.
-Sing the song "Welcome Back to School" with the piano. Students will do what the song asks them to do. "Can you clap and count to 8?" Students will clap and count to 8. Sing the song multiple times doing different actions. (clap, snap, jump, pat, etc.)
-Add instruments to the song in place of clapping, snapping, or jumping. Instruments will be wood block, tambourine, guiro, triangle, and cowbell. Each student will get 2 turns to play and instrument.
-Learn the poem Hickory Dickory Dock with motions and in rhythm.
-Read and sing-a-long with "Pete the Cat: I love my white shoes".

2nd Grade
-March in the classroom to the steady beat of Mr. Drum. Practice starting and stopping to different tempos (speeds)
-Discuss and practice the music class rules. 1. Raise your hand to speak 2. Be an active participant 3. Be Kind and Considerate 4. Play instruments when asked.
-Play the name game "Each Peach, Pear Plum". The whole class will say the poem while patting the steady beat. Each student will take turns saying "My name is ______" the class echoes "His/Her name is _______"
-Echo rhythms using body percussion. The class will echo the teacher's rhythms using claps, snaps, pats, and stomps.
-Discover various ways to play the hand drums by copying the teacher. We will go through this sequence rubbing the drum, scratching the drum, tapping with our fingers, playing on the edge of the drum (high tone), playing the middle of the drum (base tone). The results sound similar to a rainstorm.
-Learn the poem Go, Go, Go! and the correct places to clap. Clap on the words One, Two, Three, Go Go Go.
-Play hand drums to Go Go Go! Using drumming instead of clapping. When students become very comfortable with their own rhythm, the teacher will add a different rhythm beat on the Djembe.
