Lesson Plan for August 29 - September 2
Kindergarten
- March in to Mr. Drum
- Discuss the classroom rules and take a tour of the music room
- Bump, Bump, Bump - listen to the song story and remember which characters got on the bus and when
- Learn to play an instrument - Rhythm Sticks - we will put our instruments on the floor when they are handed to us and then put our hands in our lap.
- We will learn the different ways to use our rhythm sticks - click, scrape, tap, pat, roll, pound, hammer, and violin.
- Listen to the story Pete the Cat: Rocking in my School Shoes (the recording can be found on the Harper Collins Children's literature website). We will sing and play "air guitar" when Pete is rocking in his school shoes. We will also answer the questions that are asked in the book.
- Talk about Behavior Beats - a class reward system for good behavior and put the behavior beat earned on the board.
- Practice our line-up procedure
1st Grade
- March in to Mr. Drum
- Discuss the classroom rules and take a tour of the new music classroom
- Listen to the song "Welcome Back to School" and perform the actions that are asked during the song. The students will being singing along with the teacher when they are comfortable.
- Add instruments to the song one-by-one, and the students will pass the instruments around the room as we add new ones, until everyone has played an instrument at least twice. Instruments we will add are Wood block, tambourine, cowbell, triangle, hand drum and guiro.
- We will learn two speech poems for the next music class: "I think music's neat" and "Hickory Dickory Dock"
- Talk about Behavior Beats - a class reward system for good behavior and put the behavior beat earned on the board

2nd Grade
- March in to Mr. Drum
- Discuss the classroom rules and take a tour of the new music classroom
- Play "Each Peach, Pear Plum" name game while patting a steady beat on our laps. Continue the game until all students have had a turn.
- We will echo rhythm patterns using body percussion (snapping, clapping, patting, and stomping)
- Learn the speech poem "Go! Go! Go!" and add the hand percussion parts. When the students can say the poem independently the teacher will add a conga drum beat.
- Pass out hand drums to every other student and perform "Go! Go! Go!" on hand drums. Between each verse we will pass our drums to the right one person. Add an extension of the speech poem "Go! Go! Go!" to say as we pass our drums.
