Lesson Plan January 8-17, 2014

Kindergarten

  • March in to Mr. Drum
  • Echo slide whistle sounds using high and low sounds. Identify high and low sounds
  • Learn the song "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater" while patting the steady beat.
  • Review instruments learned from the "Going to the Farm" Lessons. (Rhythm sticks, tambourine, maracas, cow bell, wood block, castanets.) Learn the picture representation for each instrument.
  • "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater" Game: One student is chosen to be Peter. Peter walks around the circle while the class sings the song and keeps a steady beat. At the end of the song Peter chooses a new Peter and then picks an instrument to play the steady beat on for the song. The game continues until all students have had a turn.
  • Learn song "Handy Dandy". Students will sing the song and at the end of the song the teacher will play high or low notes on the piano. The students will identify high by raising their arms or low by lowering their arms.
  • Learn the poem "Snowflakes". Teacher will play the melody of the song on the recorder in small parts. The students will identify with pictures whether the melody is going up (going higher) or going down (going lower).
  • Review Class Dojo points and line up.

1st Grade

  • March in to Mr. Drum using fast and slow tempos. Discuss the terms Tempo for speed of the beat, Allegro for fast and Andante for slow.
  •  Echo the slide whistle using high and low sounds to warm up the voice. Discuss high and low sounds.
  • Learn high and low notes So and Mi with hand signs. Echo sing on So and Mi using voices and hand signs.
  • Practice keeping a steady beat by sliding hands back and forth. Review tempo discussed earlier and try different tempos using this motion. Transfer this motion to scratching on a hand drum.
  • Learn the song "Engine Engine". Sing the song with the teacher playing an 8-beat introduction before we start the song. Divide students into 3 groups. Group 1: Drums; play 8 beat introduction Group 2: Train; Engineer leads the train around the room to the steady beat of the song. Group 3: Barred Instruments; group plays on C and G to the steady beat of the song. At the end of the song, Drummer goes to the end of the train, Engineer goes to the barred instruments, and the end barred instrument player goes to the Drum Group and the song continues. During the transition we chant "Chugga Chugga, Chugga Chugga, Chugga Chugga, Choo Choo". Students must be in place by the choo choo.

2nd Grade

  • March in to Mr. Drum.
  • So-La-Mi Singing Game: Students echo the teacher using the solfege hand signs and syllables Mi, So, and La. The phrase that we can't sing is (So-La-Mi). If the students echo this phrase the teacher gets a point. If the students do not echo the phrase when sung by the teacher, the students get the point.
  • Discuss line and space notes. Line notes have the line going through the middle of the note and space notes take up the space in between the lines. Students will take turns drawing line notes or space notes on the board.
  • Jelly in the Bowl poem. Students will learn the poem and tap the rhythm of the words with their fingers. Then students will learn the ostinato (accompaniment) part with hand motions.
  • Students will practice performing the ostinato while the teacher performs the poem and vice versa. We will then split into two groups. One group will perform the poem while the other performs the ostinato. When successful add instruments for each part. Rhythm Sticks for the poem and tambourine and cow bell for ostinato.
  • Review Class Dojo points and line up.
