Lesson Plan February 18 - March 1
Kindergarten
- March in to Mr. Drum - play Mr. Drum says to explore different ways of moving to the steady beat. (Gallop, Slide, Jump, Hop, Walk, etc.) We move to the beat only when Mr. Drum says to move. This is similar to the game simon says.
- Introduce Kitty (a black cat puppet)
- Voice Warm-Up: Echo Kitty's meows going up an down
- Learn song "Naughty Kitty Cat" with Kitty
- Sing "Naughty Kitty Cat" while patting the steady beat
- Read the story Bad Kitty. Everytime Kitty does something bad in the story, we sing the song "Naughty Kitty Cat" and pat the steady beat.
- Introduce the xylophones and how to play them. Holding the mallets (pinch, curl, hold them similar to handlebars, and bounce them on the bars)
- Give each student a chance to play on all 3 xylophones and help them practice good playing techniques. Each student will play the steady beat on two bars while we sing "Naughty Kitty Cat"

1st Grade
- March in to Mr. Drum
- Voice Warm-Up: Toss Across Students will take turns tossing the yarn ball to a classmate. When the ball is moving we will follow it in the air with our voices going up and down (high and low)
- Echo Song: In the Woods Practicing good singing
- Review notes and rhythms we discussed last lesson. Quarter Note = Ta Rest = Silence
- Practice reading several rhythms that use quarter notes and rests.
- Introduce the story Click Clack Moo: Cows that Type. Discuss a typewriter and the instruments we can use to make the sounds of the typewriter. Rhythm Sticks for the clicking of the keys. Finger Cymbals for the bell sound. Ratchet for resetting the paper.
- Each student will choose one of the instruments listed above. Students will watch the teacher for cues to know when to play their instrument.
- Read the story Click Clack Moo: Cows that Type. Everytime we see a typewritten message in the story we will make the sounds of the typwriter writing the message. And we will sing Click Clack Moo, Click Clack Moo, Clickety Clack Moo when that part appears in the story.

2nd Grade
- March in to Mr. Drum using Strong, weak, weak beat organization (Sww)
- Listen to a music examples that uses Sww beat organization. Ask the students to identify the pattern of the beat. Compare that music with a piece that does not use Sww beat organization. Ask if the Sww beat can fit to that song.
- Voice Warm-Up: Toss Across Students will take turns tossing the yarn ball to a classmate. When the ball is moving we will follow it in the air with our voices going up and down (high and low)
- Spanish Echo Song: Caney Mi Macaro Listen to the CD recording that uses the spanish guitar to accompany the song.
- Learn the song Engine Engine while keep the steady beat by sliding our palms back and forth. Explore different tempos (speeds). Transfer the steady beat to a hand drum and become the Conductor. The conductor will give the steady beat 8 times at the tempo they choose before we sing the song. Discuss the 8 beat before we sing as being an introduction to the song.
- Each student will take a turn being the conductor of the train. After they have taken a turn on the drum they will move to playing the steady beat on the xylophones. While each conductor is being chosen we will chant Chugga Chugga, Chugga Chugga and end with Choo Choo when the new conductor is chosen.
